Chlorine dioxide
The Illustrated Guide to Hot and Cold Water Services (BG 33/2014), written by Reginald Brown and published by BSRIA in 2014, states: ‘Chlorine dioxide (ClO2) is created from the reaction of hazardous precursor chemicals that must be stored on site. It is usually dosed into the cold water distribution system as it is less soluble in hot water. The risk of pipework corrosion may be increased immediately downstream of the injection point. At low concentration (<0.5 ppm), ClO2 is effective against legionella and other bacteria. However, there are limits on the permissible level of total oxidants. These may include unreacted precursor chemicals and reaction byproducts.’
